ookantha Gunathilake, a popular Sri Lankan singer, songwriter and composer. Rookantha started his career at very young age. That is, at the age of 16.

Rookantha is one of the most successful musicians in Sri Lankan pop industry. Around 100000 copies of his albums have been sold in Sri Lanka. He is known as the person who changed the Sri Lankan music industry in the 80’s with his songs.

Rookantha Goonatillake was born in Kandy. But he lived in Kegalle. With the guidance of his mother and father (Mary & David) he studied music. His parents encouraged him very much to do music and singing. He attended St. Mary’s College, Kegalle for first three years of education and there after he attended St.Anthony’s College, Kandy. He started singing on stage at the age of 9 and musically backed by his teacher with violin only and the whole band thereafter. The band was the fabulous “Fortunes”. At the same time he was enrolled to the 76 piece choir led by Mr. Cyril Brown. There initially he sang Soprano thereafter Alto , Tenor & Bass.

Also, he was a composer during school days. He used to write lyrics and tunes initially for Catholic hymns then songs. Later, he joined the field of music as a Keyboardist. Also, he composed songs for many reputed Artists like Neela Wickramasinghe, Milton Mallawarachchi, Clarence Wijewardane and many other young Artists.

Rookantha is famous for commercials, radio jingles and TV & Radio IDs in many channels of Sri Lanka.

Rookantha married Chandralekha Perera, a very clever singer and an actress in 1988. They have two childern, Raini Charuka Goonatillake and Trinita Windy. Since late 2005 December, Rookantha and Chandralekha live in New York with their family.
